Myndstef was founded in 1991. Its mission is to take care of its members' interests as regards copyright in cases of official republishing and exhibiting of their works and to strengthen respect for copyright in the visual arts in general. On behalf of its members, Myndstef collects fees for the use of copyrighted works. Myndstef monitors and seeks to influence the development of legislation and regulations as well as of business practices in the field of copyright. It also takes care of negotiations involving copyright interests between its members on one hand and public and private parties on the other.
On 7 September 1992, Myndstef was officially recognized by the Icelandic Ministry of Culture and Education as an association taking care of the interests of visual artists, as witnessed by the following excerpt from the Ministry's letter:
"Having received a favourable opinion from the Copyright Committee, the
Ministry for Culture and Education hereby grants Myndhöfundasjóður Íslands, Myndstef formal legal recognition in accordance with Article 25, second paragraph, of the Copyright Act, No. 73/1972, as amended by Article 9, second paragraph, of Act No. 57/1992, provided that the Association fulfills the terms of the abovementioned provisions, thereby accepting responsibility for payment claims by non-members for any
use dependent on agreements contracted by Myndstef."
The statutes and tariffs of Myndstef were approved by the Minister for Culture and Education on 10 and 11 July 1995 (Official Journal B 72/1995).
